Gameplay

Campaign

For Full Article: Call of Duty: World at War Campaign
The campaign varies on two characters, like the Call Of Duty games before. It switches between Pvt. Miller of the Marine Raiders, and Pvt. Dimitri Petrenko of the 3rd Shock Army. Pvt. Millers campaign shows the bloody and dirty war between the Marine Raiders and the Japanese Imperial Army. Pvt. Dimitri Petrenko campaign is a personal war between the Russians and the Nazis, fighting for pride and the motherland.

The U.S campaign starts, with a small cut-scene, filling you in with events that have and are to happen. Pvt. Miller and his squad, consisting of: Pvt. Pyle, Pvt. McCord and Pvt. Nelson, were captured by the Imperial army, and are being held hostage and being tortured. Unwilling to answer the questions they ask them, the Imperial Army start the slaughtering. Your fellow teammates neck is sliced open with a Katana. Just as they came to Pvt.Miller, Cpl. Roebuck comes from behind to save you. Roebuck offers a hand, and takes you outside, where you come into contact with your first weapon.

You are now a part of the 1st Marine Raiders!

The Russian campaign starts, with you (Pvt. Dimitri) waking up, in a pile of bodies. You see people squirming, trying to get away, but the Nazi patrols spot this and shoot both bodies moving, and not. Once they move on past, you crawl forward, where you meet Sgt. Reznov, who shushes you, with fingers to lips. He then crawls forward and you follow. He has a personal grudge, that he needs help with, as he is unable to do it himself, as his hands have been bandaged for an unknown reason.

Multiplayer

Playlists

World At War, has the same engine as the previous Call Of Duty game, (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare) meaning that it runs in the same type of way. Apart from different maps, weapons, some new perks, vehicles and a whole new variety of cool stuff, it is much alike! However, I new function, for parties hitting the playlists is 'squads' meaning, that you and and your party are put together in a squad, example 'Alpha Squad'. The leader, can send signals to the map, for backup, or areas where flocks of enemies hide. It also marks out your squad-mates on the mini map, a different colour, Example Blue. Making it easier to stick together for penetrating teamwork! Alike Call of Duty 4, there is still kill streak rewards. Meaning that if you achieved so many kills and no deaths, you get extras to help yourself, or your team. A 3 kill streak will enable you to use a 'Recon Plane' instead of the UAV Recon. A 5 kill streak will enable you to use a 'Artillery Strike' instead for an air strike. A 7 kill streak will enable you to use a 'Pack of Dogs' instead of a helicopter.

Maps

There are 23 multiplayer maps in Call of Duty: World at War.

Reception

Call of Duty: World at War received mostly positive reviews. The PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions all received a 9.2/10 from IGN. The Playstation 2 version of the game received generally negative reviews due to it's inferior graphics and lack of online play, this version received a 4.5/10 from IGN. The Wii version of the game received reviews ranging from good to mixed, most criticism was based upon the lack of voice chat and graphics. The game was mainly praised due to its online game modes as well as the addition of a Co-operative mode, which was said to dramatically increase the game's replay value. The game received a high amount of sales even though the expected reaction would be to ignore it as many reviews and previews seemed negative. The amount of copies bought shocked many reviewers who have also changed their opinions on the game before and after its release. The game was first believed to be a remake of the first three Call of Duty games, but later on it was found out to be an extension to World War II and pacific island wars.
